Running Water Farms

About Us

A few years ago my wife, Jana and I found ourselves approaching our late forties, feeling like our late fifties and, in my case, looking like my late sixties. We resolved to start eating better and turned to organic food to try and stave off getting old any faster than we had to. We immediately noticed a difference both in our enjoyment of the food and the way we felt. On those few occasions when we would eat something processed, Jana especially noticed the adverse effect it had on how she felt.
Still, the improvement we felt left something to be desired so we began to research how food, both conventional and organic, is produced. What we learned convinced us that if we were going to have the kind of food we were seeking, we would either have to grow it ourselves or find a local producer we could trust and buy directly from him.

My childhood was spent on a dairy farm and I never really got farming out of my blood and Jana’s education is in animal nutrition so we decided to buy a small farm and thus Running Water Farms was born (so named because we have an irrigation canal traversing our land that holds water only during our short growing season. When there’s running water, we can farm).

The crew

          The Crew
Ours is a Family Farm in two ways. First in the traditional sense. Our oldest son, Levi, does much of the equipment maintenance.
Our adult daughters, Beky and Elisabeth (Biffy) live nearby and help with chores (Biffy is particularly adept at butchering chickens). Our married son, Jacob lives in Alaska but still finds ways to participate through shared research, encouragement and occasional visits when he, his wife Crissy and our granddaughter Juliet pitch right in. Our two little girls, Hannah and Sarah, make excellent egg gatherers.

Second, we have no intention of and, in fact, believe it is inappropriate for us to try, feeding the world. We are not, and don’t want to be, Archer Daniels Midland. Rather we aspire to being the Family Farmer to a small group of clients in much the same way you would have a Family Doctor. We want our relationship with our customers to be such that they say “My doctor is…., my mechanic is… and my farmer is Running Water Farms.
